Quickie: This is Your Mind On Twitter

Fun! Columbia Journalism Review notes that you can make any headline suddenly fashionable and timely simply by adding “On Twitter” to it. Let’s try it with today’s Washington Post:

  • Specter Leaves GOP, Shifting Senate Balance On Twitter
  • A Tense Beginning For Obama’s Agenda On Twitter
  • Experts Study Flu’s Variations On Twitter
  • Little Boy at the Center of Storm On Twitter

It works! Lo, I have seen the future of journalism.

Professor Lowe's Balloon in Fair Oaks, Virginia

This photograph was taken in May, 1862 near Fair Oaks Virginia. This is another picture of Professor Lowe’s balloon, the Intrepid. Like the earlier picture, this one has a number of men on the ground. It looks like it took a dozen or so people to support the balloon launch.

SOS Pizza

Rue Saint Christophe
Yet another street find today: pizza, fresh from the gutter. Check out the box: The real taste of Italy, it says. I wonder if their delivery staff is as sexy as the box suggests? Maybe you’d order pizza more often if it were the case? Do you often have home-delivered pizza? I never do. In fact I’ve never ordered a home-delivered meal. I believe it’s still quite rare in France, I don’t think it’s part of the culture here. But maybe it’s only me? I do see pizza delivery motorbikes racing around town all the time…

Day Trip to the Murgia, 4

The bountiful variety of flowers of the Alta Murgia!

To the left, a snapdragon.

To the right, a wild orchid.

Yellow and pink daisies?

This looks like a thistle to me.

Anyone know the names of the others?

Day Trip to the Murgia, 3

Besides eating and enjoying the scenery, the declared objective for our trip to the Alta Murgia was to go mushroom hunting. Our friend, Francesco, is an expert mushroom hunter and this area is famous for its cardoncello mushrooms. The photo above is of a ferula plant, which is native to this area and can grow up to 4 meters in height. When these plants die, mushrooms often grow at their base. Our walking sticks, seen in yesterday’s photos, were dried ferula stalks.

Another plant we were hunting for was wild asparagus. In the photo above, you can see some growing out of this dead tree stump.

We all kept our heads down and our eyes open in the search for mushrooms and asparagus, but the sharpest eyes belonged to my older son in the yellow shirt here. He found two large cardoncellos and several asparagus plants.

Another thing we had to keep our eyes open for, to avoid, rather than to hunt, were these innocuous looking little caterpillars, called Processionarie in Italian because they travel in single-file, as if they were in an Easter procession. They damage pine or oak trees, depending on what type they are, and can be quite dangerous for humans because they cause allergic reactions, ranging from rash to respiratory problems. There were hundreds of nests all through the fields, but we kept well away from them!

Ready With the Bow Line

Ready With the Bow Line

A boat makes its way westward through the ship canal to the Hiram Chittendem Locks at sunset. She was the lone vessel for this evening’s operation, but I expect numbers to pick up as we near the opening of boating season next month. I loved seeing that reflected bow and fender in the calm water. (Sorry this post comes late: I thought it was scheduled for Sunday, but I just realized it was stuck in draft instead. Ah, the thechie details!)

What's the story behind...?

David wanted to buy a new bumper for the back of our RV. We drove to a shop where they were selling all kind of parts in Carthage,Missouri.

They promise on their website to find every single part you need for your vehicle, but we could not find a bumper for ours!

Colaw RV Parts & Salvage
is undisputedly the nation’s leading provider for the RV part and salvage business. Our facility is conveniently located in Carthage, MO.

While David was talking with the guys and walking around in the mud to find something acceptable, I was snapping some pictures of these sad looking damaged vehicles.
Some were just out of service because of their age, but this one looks like it was in a big accident.
It’s not visible in the picture, but in the hole in the upper right corner was even a little bird nesting. What a great and secure place for that new bird family…right? :)
Many of them were in a rack. I thought, they were all very sad looking buses and RV’s - I would love to know some of the stories behind them!

Hi my friends,

Thank you again for all the nice comments and for all your visits to my blog, even you’re not commenting (anymore?) :)

We are back in Oklahoma again and are gambling and hoping to win some money in the beautiful casinos here in the region. Last night we had a very heavy thunderstorm that was shaking our little RV like crazy. We don’t know where to go just now, maybe more East if the weather is good over there. We have planned also to visit my only one cousin I never have met, living in Nashville.

Or it’s better maybe to wait until it’s warmer with all our plans going to the East coast and spend more time in the warmer Southwest of the States…? We really don’t know…!

And reading about the outbreak of these new “swine flu” cases doesn’t makes our travels easy anymore - scary stuff is going one, people!

Stay tuned with me!
Susanne and David

Oh….btw,

Our summer job in Branson’s RV Park doesn’t worked out for us in many reasons - we are now “free” again and open to new adventures. Two artists - that’s we! - are not made for working on regulated places, I guess…LOL… :)
